About the company

OrbitAID Aerospace is building the foundation for a new era of on-orbit servicing and refueling, enabling satellites to operate longer, maneuver more freely, and deliver greater value in space. At the core of this vision is the development of standardized docking and refueling technologies and a future network of orbital fuel stations, transforming how spacecraft are designed, launched, and sustained in orbit.
Our long-term goal is to make space operations more flexible, resilient, and sustainable—where satellites are serviced, upgraded, and refueled rather than replaced. We are a small, driven team that values strong engineering fundamentals, ownership, and hands-on problem solving. At OrbitAID, you’ll work closely across disciplines, move quickly from concept to hardware and software, and contribute directly to building the space infrastructure that will power the next generation of missions.

Role Overview

The Vision System Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, and validation of vision-based navigation systems to support autonomous rendezvous, proximity and docking operations. The role focuses on camera-based relative navigation, pose estimation, feature tracking, and perception algorithms for cooperative and non-cooperative targets. This position works closely with Mission Design, GNC, Navigation, Autonomy, and On-board Software teams to ensure robust, reliable, and safety-critical vision performance across all RPO phases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define end-to-end vision system architecture development for optical based sensors
  • Support mission-level trade studies considering lighting, range, target geometry, and operational constraints
  • Define vision system operational modes and system performance requirements across RPOD phases
  • Develop and analyze algorithms for Relative position and attitude estimation, feature detection and tracking and Optimize algorithms for real-time, onboard execution
  • Implement methods using Model-based approaches and Feature-based and learning-based approaches
  • Design and implement image processing pipelines for spacecraft detection, segmentation and 2D to 3D reconstruction
  • Develop high-fidelity simulation environments for vision algorithm testing
  • Perform closed loop algorithm validation using Synthetic imagery,Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) setups, Ground testbeds and lab facilities
  • Prepare vision system documentation including architecture descriptions, algorithm specifications, calibration procedures, and performance validation reports.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in computer vision and image processing.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Computer Vision, Computer Science or related field
  • Strong fundamentals in:
    • Computer vision
    • Estimation theory
    • Linear algebra and optimization
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C++

Preferred / Highly Desired Skills

  • Experience with Vision-based navigation and image processing and data pipelines
  • Familiarity with :
    • OpenCV, ROS, TensorFlow / PyTorch
    • AI based algorithm development, training and testing
  • Understanding of:
    • Camera calibration and distortion models
    • Onboard software and real-time constraints

Nice to Have

  • Experience with space missions or CubeSats
  • Exposure to flight-qualified vision hardware
  • Publications or research in vision-based navigation or robotics
  • If you want to explore the future of on-orbit infrastructure, we would love to hear from you!
